How to determine the key of a piece:
- Look at the first and last notes......this is not a definite indicator but usually the piece begins and ends with the name of the key
- If the piece is in minor you will see the leading tone show up a lot......the leading tone is the 7th scale degree and is a half step away from the tonic (1st scale degree).....it is an accidental if the piece is in minor
- Look for the raised 6th scale degree (it will also be an accidental)
- If you do not see anything from numbers two and three, it is probably in a major key signature.
Remember that every key signature has a relative minor----this means they share the same key signature.
C major=A minor (no sharps or flats)
G major=E minor (1#)
D major=B minor (2#)
A major=C# minor (3#)
F major=D minor (1 flat)
B-flat major=G minor (2 flats)
